How do I use ChatGPT or Claude with the prompts?
Who Where When doesn't run an AI for you. Instead, it writes prompts for the AI you already use. Copy a prompt, paste it into ChatGPT or Claude with your chapter, and paste the reply back into Import, where you review every change before it's saved.
Each prompt is built from your current bible, including names, aliases and books, so the AI matches existing entries instead of inventing duplicates. The reply comes back in a structured format (called seriesbible/v1) that Import knows how to read.
Copy a prompt
- Open Prompts in the sidebar, under AI.
- Pick a prompt from the list.
- Fill in any options: Book (optional) and Chapter number (optional) tell the AI which chapter the facts come from, so each fact gets the right source. Some prompts ask for a Character or Your question.
- Choose Copy prompt.
- Open ChatGPT or Claude (the buttons under the prompt open them), paste the prompt, and paste your text after it.
- Copy the AI's whole reply, then open Import and paste it. See Review an import.
Which prompt should I use?
| Prompt | Paste after it | Use it to |
|---|---|---|
| Extract from a chapter | One chapter | Pull characters, places, facts, events and relationships out of a chapter |
| Character deep dive | Several chapters | Find every fact about one character |
| Timeline builder | Chapters or a synopsis | List events in order with in-story dates |
| Continuity audit | A new chapter | Compare it with your bible and list contradictions with quotes |
| Backfill from a synopsis | Outlines, synopses or blurbs | Build a starter bible for books already written |
| Brainstorm | Your question | Get new ideas that fit your world, marked as drafts |
Extract from a chapter is the one most people use most. Work one chapter at a time: replies are more accurate, and each fact cites the right chapter.
Set it up once
If you'd rather not paste a prompt every time, open Set it up once in a Claude Project or custom GPT on the Prompts page and choose Copy project instructions. Paste them into a Claude Project's instructions or a custom GPT's configuration. After that, you only need to paste chapters.
Project instructions are a snapshot. They don't include your current names, so the per-chapter prompts are better at avoiding duplicates as the bible grows.
Tips for better replies
- Use the AI's largest context option for long chapters.
- If the reply stops partway, Import notices and gives you a Copy “continue” message to send back.
- If the reply can't be read, Import offers Copy a “please fix it” message for the AI.
- Facts the AI guessed at come back marked "inferred" and start unticked in Import.
Your text only goes to the AI you paste it into, under that AI's own terms. For a hands-off route, see Connect your AI, and for ideas on working with AI in general, see Story bible with AI.
Common questions
Do I need a paid AI subscription?
No, any ChatGPT or Claude account works. Longer chapters fit better on plans with larger limits. Who Where When doesn't charge for or run the AI.
Why does the prompt include my bible?
So the AI uses the names and aliases you already have. Without it, the AI might create Sir Kael as a new character instead of matching Kael Varn.
Keep your story straight
Who Where When keeps every character, place and date in your books, and tells you when the story contradicts itself.
